Three Fifth District congressional candidates gathered at Patrick Henry High School Thursday for another forum, but Green Party Senate candidate Michael Cavlan stole much of the show with a warning about military recruiters.

Cavlan, who grew up in Northern Ireland, told a couple dozen high school students at an after-school forum to be wary of military recruiters and “do not allow them to tempt you with their toys and gifts and trinkets” because “they will never tell you the brutal, ugly realities of the conflict of war.” … Several students in the audience acknowledged they had been approached by military recruiters.

Republican congressional candidate Alan Fine, who teaches at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School, told Cavlan his speech was inappropriately graphic for the students. Cavlan shot back, “That’s your opinion.”

Fine later was the target of comments from a parent, Lisa Cannon-Ratliff, who told him to stop attacking state Rep. Keith Ellison, the DFL nominee, because Fine’s statements are “extremely offensive to our children and our state” and
“If we look closely, there’s an association we all have that may not represent our views.”

Fine has accused Ellison of having joined the Nation of Islam, which Ellison denies. He hadn’t raised the issue in the one-hour forum Thursday, although he has done so in other recent meetings. Fine told Cannon-Ratliff it was fair for him to question Ellison’s “character.”

The candidates made statements and answered an array of questions from students ranging from whether they can make a difference (yes) to why Cavlan moved to the United States (! a job).

Ellison: “I really believe we’ve got to change the political dialog and refocus the country quite a bit.”

Fine: “I don’t want there to be wars. I want to find peaceful ways to solve our world’s problems.”

Independence Party candidate Tammy Lee: “I want to go to Washington to actually serve in Congress and make a difference.”

The Cavlan for United States Senate campaign condemns this resolution, which was passed unanimously.

Michael Cavlan, Green Party candidate for United States Senate states “we condemn this resolution and the unbelievable political cowardice of those who support it as well as the Israeli government without any question or reservations.”

Cavlan also states “no-one can claim to support human rights and support this bill and the actions of the Israeli government at the same time.”

He further states”in this time of conflict, our country desperately needs voices for peace and sanity. Our campaign will be proud to stand for these noble principles and values, held so dearly by many decent people in Minnesota and elsewhere.”

Cavlan then directed his comments to members of the Minnesota Peace and Justice community.”We challenge those people in Minnesota who hold these principles and ideals to join in our campaign immediately. The time for courage and decisive action is now.”

He ended his statement directed at the mainstream, corporate owned media and journalists working within it. “We will also hold the media in this country responsible for their coverage of this critical issue. Thomas Jefferson called a ‘free and independent press’ indispensable to democracy. He called you the “Fourth Estate” of democracy.

The time to start acting like you believe in this principle is now. Your time of courage is now. The future of our world and democratic rights in our country demands nothing less”.

Of note within 534:

“Whereas the Government of Israel has shown restraint in the past year…”

“Whereas, without provocation, on the morning of July 12, 2006, Hezbollah launched an attack into northern Israel,….”

” Resolved, That the Senate– (1) reaffirms its steadfast support for the State of Israel;”

“urges the President to continue fully supporting Israel as Israel exercises its right of self-defense in Lebanon and Gaza” [Note: this does not just support Israel's right to self-defense, it supports its exercise of that right.]

“condemns the Governments of Iran and Syria for their continued support for Hezbollah and Hamas, and holds the Governments of Syria and Iran responsible for the acts of aggression carried out by Hezbollah and Hamas against Israel” [Note: This is obviously very dangerous and helps set the stage for a wider war including an attack on Iran.]

This resolution was introduced, with 61 co-sponsors, including both Coleman and Dayton, along with Feingold, Boxer, Harkin, Kennedy, Feinstein, Leahy, Obama, and Kerry.

The Washington Post reports this resolution was also supported by Mark Kennedy and Amy Klobuchar.

The Robert F. Kennedy Jr. article in Rolling Stone magazine, CNN’s subsequent interview with Kennedy, and finally the Star Tribune’s “Down for the Count on Election ’04″ (published June 18th) has finally brought to light the crisis of potential electoral fraud that we face as a nation. This was covered in detail by Representative John Conyers report, What went wrong in Ohio.

I was one of the nine people from Minnesota who actively participated in the Ohio recount. I still remember our group holding a press conference on the steps of the State Capitol building and having no media presence there at all. This has been one of the primary issues for our campaign for United States Senate, because the lessons and implications of Ohio are stunning.

Kennedy correctly points out the issues of caging minorities, voter intimidation/suppression, questionable “computer glitches,” closed source computer programs used in the counting process, no paper trails, and a host of other problems we experienced in Ohio.

Unfortunately, Kennedy misses in his article and analysis is the role of the Green Party and the lack of leadership exhibited by John Kerry and most other Democratic leaders in the recount effort. It is a fact that Kerry had 54 million dollars in his war chest, 18 million set aside specifically to fight back in case of fraud. It took the Green Party’s presidential candidate to mount the recount challenge and organize the resources, volunteers, and money to make it happen. It must be stated that it was our friends in Progressive Democrats of America who were instrumental in organizing this effort.

It is an undeniable truth that were it not for the Green Party standing for our right to vote and have our votes counted accurately, none of us would even be aware of the crisis we face.

Those of us who have been working on this issue for the past two years are delighted the media is finally making an issue of it. Thomas Jefferson stated that a free and independent media is the cornerstone of Democracy. The job of a free press, or what he called the fourth estate of democracy is to inform the public without fear or favor. It may be two years too late but better late than never. After all what is at risk is the integrity of our entire democracy.

Mr. Cavlan expressed his belief that passing this resolution would have been a good beginning to bring an end to the madness of the current administration and institute policies for the good of the people of Minnesota, the United States and World. “For other Senate Candidates to do otherwise, proves that they will not stand up for Citizen rights, regardless of the situation. Not the Executive Branch of the government, Lobbyists, or Party Leaders should deter a Senator from defense the Constitution.”
